One of the only countries with three capital cities (Pretoria, Cape Town and Bloemfontein), split that way in 1910 as a compromise between rival former colonies. Table Mountain in Cape Town is flanked by cliffs so sheer a cable car has carried visitors to its flat summit since 1929.

Adopted in 1994 for the first democratic election, designed to convey unity through the merging Y-shape. No official meaning was assigned to the individual colors.
