Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country in Central Asia where the Tian Shan mountains cover most of the land. Its capital is Bishkek, and Issyk-Kul, one of the largest mountain lakes in the world, lies in its northeast. It became independent from the Soviet Union in 1991.
